- occured slightly south of Beijing
- jap troops stationed legally in north china (boxer rebellion) and had another trick to get china to fight with them
- jap troops can't move during the night and they sent troops at night to walk around to see if they would react and of course they do and shot them
- this is the 1st battle of WWII and the fighting now continues for the rest of WWII

- Diasterous for the Chinese
- 200,000 chinese citizens are killed
- 20,000-30,000 chinese women are raped by japanese troops
- japs win
- results:
- 1.CKS abandons nanjing moves to Chongqing that is surrounded by gorges and has rough terrain that the japs don't even attempt to conquer
- 2. attack published in the west and at this point was one of the worst atrocities of war the world had heard and this gains the chinese int'l sympathy but no moneye
- by 1938 the jap control 80% of chinese population
