The first event causing World War I was the assasination of Archduke Fancis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Other factors that had been brewing such as Militarism, Imperialism and Nationalism between the allies also were causes.

A deep devotion to your country. Can casue many problems and conflicts between two countries or nations when the people of each feel strong nationalism for their homeland.

Beginning in the 1890s strong nationalism led to a race between European counties to arm themselves, or rather build up their armies and navies. European nations believed that to be considered truly great they need a strong military.

Growing militarism and nationalism led to several alliances between the Great Powers. Countries formed alliances with other countries in order to more safe if they were attacked. They wanted to keep peace in Europe but the formation of alliances actually pushed Europe into war.

Poison gas was introduced by the Germans and was a horrible new weapon. Some gasses caused death by blinding men or severly blistering them. Other gasses caused death by choking and suffocation.

The machine gun fires ammunition/bullets automatically and very quickly. Machine guns sometimes caused a "stalemate" when both sides had lost so many soldiers they could not continue fighting - but neither side had really won the battle.

A total war is when all the countries involved in the conflict use all their resources to help the war effort. The war effort controls the economy. Factories could only produce what the government told them they could - usally amunition, tanks, guns, etc. Other products were made only minimally.

Totalitarianism is when a goverment completely controls every aspect of people's lives - their job, how many children they can have, what their religion will be, etc.

Information spread to convince people someone their ruler is right and the opponant is wrong. Dropping leaflets from planes was used during war to spread information such as this. Russia used propoganda to convice the Russian people everything was good in Russia.

Censorship is used during a war to delete information that might be helpful to the enemy if they read it. Soldiers letters home would be censored (words blacked out) if parts of the letter were thought to benefit the enemy should they read it.
Russia often censored their writers and composers. Russian leaders did not want their own people to hear anythig bad about Russia.

When people are persecuted (attacked or punished) because they worship God - someone other than the dictator of their coutry. Russia persecuted people and said that no one could go to Church. Hitler picked one religion Judaism and persecuted only the Jew.

A dictator will often use terror to dominate an entire nation of people. Dictators use terror and violence to force obediance and crush their enemies. Dictators often have a special police force to carry out the terror activities.

Stalin came to power after Lenin died. Stalin turned Russia into a totalitarian state with him as the dictator. FIrst Stalin took control of the economy. He wanted complete government control. He could control people by having the factories only produce a certain amount of differen goods - so people never had a enough of anything including food. Stalin also used terror to control people and had a special police force to keep control.
