A German U-boat sinks the British passenger liner Lusitania. Nearly 1,200 people die, including 128 Americans.

A U-boat torpedoes the French passenger liner Sussex, injuring several Americans.  President Wilson demands an end to unannounced attacks.  Germany agrees to stop.

Definition

 

 

The Zimmermann telegram is leaked to the public. In the telegram, German foreign minister Arthur Zimmermann asks Mexico to ally, or join, with Germany if the United States enters the war.  The note promises to help Mexico regain its "lost lands" in the American Southwest.

German submarines sink six United States merchant ships without warning.  Germany thought the United States could not mobilize fast enough to turn the tide of war.
