Term
Strain
Definition
A tear in a tendon.
Term
Tendon
Definition
The fibrous connective tissue that attaches skeletal muscle to bone
Term
Sprain
Definition
A tear in a ligament.
Term
Ligament
Definition
The band of fibrous connective tisue that connects bones at a joint.
Term
Fibromylagia
Definition
A chronic musculoskeletal syndrome characterized by diffuse pain, fatigue, and tender points. 80-90% of those diagnosed are women between 30 & 50.
Term
Diagnosis criteria for fibromylagia
Definition
There are 9 pairs (18 total) points on the body that are associated with tenderness. A person must exhibit pain in 11 of these points, and have a history of diffuse pain, in order to be diagnosed. As a result, treatment is highly individualized
Term
Possible causes of fibromylagia
Definition
It is thought that the muscle is the end organ of this condition and the condition may be related to CNS abnormalities.
Term
Myositis
Definition
A group of skeletal muscle conditions that are caused by viral, bacterial and parasitic infections which produce inflammatory changes. Examples include tuberculosis, sarcoidosis and trichinosis.
Term
Trichinosis
Definition
A form of myositis in which trichinella larvae infect the intestinal mucosa and then travel to the lymphatics.
Term
Sarcoidosis
Definition
A form of myositis in which inflammatory changes cause accumulation of granulomas in the muscle or other organs of the body.
Term
Clubfoot
Definition
Otherwise known as congenital equinovarus, a deformity of the foot in which the forefoot is adducted and supinated, the heel is in varus (inwardly deviated) and equines (pointing down). Can be positional, idiopathic, or tetralogic.
Term
Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)
Definition
A condition of imperfect development of the hip joint that can affect the femoral head, the actetabulum, or both. Most often a congenital condition, though it may develop ideopathically, or teratogenically during infancy.
Term
Leg-Calve-Perthes Disease (LCP)
Definition
A common osteochondrosis that usually occurs between the ages of 3-10, peaks at 6 and is more common in males. The blood supply to the head of the femur near the hip joint is interrupted, resulting in osteonecrosis of the corresponding epiphysis.
Term
Osgood-Schlatter Disease
Definition
A form of osteochondrosis of the tubercle of the tibia and associated with patella tendonitis. Occurs most often in preadolescents and adolescents who participate in sports. Severity varies from mild tendonitis to complete seperation of the anterior tibial apophysis.
