- failure in any aspect of hemostasis can cause a bleeding disorder, so if p known to have bleeding problem, eval for coag defect b4 sx - follow facility’s established protocols for coagulation testing, as well as the procedures for each test. Each step is critical. - Pay attention to the type of blood req’d for each test. Different tests may require different blood type samples. |

Definition
One-Stage Prothrombin Time (OSPT) test, the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) test, direct platelet counts, buccal mucosa bleeding time, activated clotting time, clot retraction, and others |

Definition
(One-Stage Prothrombin Time) – Brief description
- primarily evaluates the extrinsic coagulation pathway - tissue thromboplastin reagent is introduced to a citrated plasma sample - then a recalcifying reagent is added - normally, a clot should form w/in 6 – 20 sec - normal range for dogs 7 – 10 sec |

Definition
(the Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) - primarily evaluates the intrinsic clotting mechanism - citrated plasma and various reagents are used to determine the time it takes fibrin to form. - Both the OSPT and APTT are usually run in an analyzer such as the SCA 2000 |

Term
|
Definition
- platelet counts can be performed manually with a microscope or w/ automated analyzers . - if a coag disorder is suspected, a manual count should be done because automated counts can be inaccurate due to platelet clumping and platelet/RBC overlap |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
- accurately report the results, including proper units of measure - accurate reporting is critical to proper dx |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
- prepare a doc identifying and describing the 2 in-house coagulation methodologies used and the QC guidelines you followed to ensure unspoiled results - may simply state the procedures were performed in accordance with (IAW) the manufacturer’s instructions or your hospital’s SOP |
