4. Name the 3 types of bone cells and their functions |
|
Definition
- Osteoblasts – cells that form bone. They secrete the matrix of bone and then supply the minerals needed to harden it - Osteocytes - . Once the osteoblasts have become trapped in the ossified matrix they have created they are called osteocytes - Osteoclasts – are the opposite of osteoblasts. Instead of forming bone, they eat it away. Bones are dynamic structures that must be remodeled constantly. Osteoclasts are necessary for remodeling to take place by removing bone from where it is not needed, then the osteoblasts form new bone in area whrere it is needed |
