VERB PATTERNS

When there are 2 verbs together in sentence, the second one is usually in the infinitive or -ing form. This is called verb pattern.Which pattern we use depends on the first verb.

If you try doing something,you do it in order to see what happens.

Ex.: She triedwashing her hair, but it still smelled bad.

If you try to do something,you attempt it but do not necessarily achiev it.

Ex.: He tried to dance, but it was awful.

 

 

Definition

If you stop doing something, you do not do it anylonger.

Ex.: My aunt stopped smoking last year.

If you stop to do something , you come to a halt in order to do something.

Ex.: Anna stopped to se her friends.

Term

If you remember doing something, you have an image of doing it in your mind.

Ex.: I remember playing tag when I was a kid.

If you remember to do something, you do something which is on your mental list of things to do.

Ex.: He remembered to fix the TV.

Definition

If you go on doing something, you  continue doing it.

Ex.: Lily went on running for 5 minutes.

If you go on to do something, you move from one action to another.

Ex.: She baked the cake, then went on to prepare the frosting.

Term

We can use see (watch, hear, feel, etc.) + object + -ing form to talk about an action that is in progress.

Ex.: I saw a snake eating a mouse.

We can use see (watch, hear, feel, etc.) + object + infinitive without to to talk about an action that is complete.

Ex.: I saw a snake eat a mouse.
