The U.S intercepted a British navel ship and on it were the negotiators Mason and Slidell. Upset, Britain demanded the release of the Confederates. Britain prepared for war by sending 11,000 troops to Canada. Lincoln released the two men and said, "One war at a time."

1. The rifled barrel increased the range and accuracy of hitting the target.
2. The caplock that fired the bullet was enclosed and could work even in rainy conditions.
3. Rifles were breech loaders so soldiers could re-load more quickly.

Attacking soldiers could be killed long before they were close to their enemy so they had to make protective positions to regain the advantage.
