What is urinary incontinence?
Definition
An involuntary loss of urine leading to a SOCIAL or health problem that may or may not need intervention. More common in post menopausal women
In general, SNS leads to filling, PNS leads to emptying

What are S/S of urinary incontinence?
Definition
Urination 8 or more times/day
Retention or urgency
Nocturia more than once
Increased risk with age, gender, pregnancy, weight, medications

What is urge incontinence and how is it treated?
Definition
- urge to go, involuntary urination caused by overactive detrusor
Treated with anticholinergics: Oxybutynin first line. All cause dry mouth, constipation, confusion
- TCAs second line

What is stress incontinence and how is it treated?
Definition
Urination upon pressure such as coughing, running due to weakened sphincter. More common in pregnant women
- Topical estrogen, do not use oral
- Alpha agonists such as PSE - many side effects
- Duloxetine

Definition
Urine is unable to leave the body, most common in men w/ BPH. Either urethra does not function or detrusor does not contract
