Following the Cold war,Fidel Castro overthrew the Cuban dictator and established a Soviet-supported totalitarian regime. After a failed US attempt to overthrow castro in 1961, The Sov Un decided to place nuclear weapons in Cuba. (This was "justified" because the US had placed nuclear weapons in Turkey...not far from Russia!) So the US gets really pissed, and Kennedy decides to blockade Cuba to prevent the fleet carrying the missiles from ever getting there. This delayed confrentation and gave the two sides time to find a peaceful solution. Khrushchev eventually agreed to turn back the fleet if Kenedy pledged not to invade cuba. in 1963, the two powers agreed to ban nuclear tests in the atmosphere, a step towards lessening tension between the two nations. |
