It might be necessary because participants knowledge of the situation could effect their behaviour and invalidate the research BUT p's may be psychologically or physically damaged by the research yet will not have had the opportunity to refuse to partiipate. |

MILGRAM - did a study of a self selected sample of 40 male volunteers. Decieved into thinking they were taking part in a word association test and if they got a word wrong they were shocked. it breaks ethical guidelines and only 3% of participants went up to 450 volts. |
