Definition

WHO: Density is used by people who take the Census every year.

WHAT: How the population is measured per unit area.

WHEN: Every year during Census.

WHERE: Density can be conneced to a population of a town/city.

Term
Distance Decay
Definition

WHO: Populations/cultures.

WHAT: The closer together two populations/culture are, the lower distance decay is.  The further away they are to other populations, the longer the distance decay are.

WHEN: When two popultions grow apart or together.

WHERE: Two different locales where the cultures are.

Term
Environmental Determinism
Definition

WHO: Environmentalists/Humans

WHAT: Also known as Climatic or geographical Determinism, it is the belief that nature sets limits on human development.

WHEN: Humans are limited by nature to do build a society.

WHERE: Happens where ever humans are living.

WHY: We cannot change our surroundings.

Term
Latitude/Longitude
Definition

WHO: Eratosthenes who lived in the 3rd century BC first theorized the latitude and longitude system for a world map.

WHAT: (vertical line) measured from the equator (north and south).

(horizontal line) measured from the prime meridian (east and west).

WHEN: 3rd century BC

WHERE:Longitude-prime meridian (east and west) .Latitude-equator (north and south).

Term
Environmental Possibilism
Definition

WHO: Humans have the power to change the environment.

WHAT:(theory) Environment sets obtacles that limits cultural geography.

WHEN: Humans want to expand to new places.

WHERE: Deforestation.

Term
Scale
Definition

WHO: Anyone using a map.

WHAT:Measurement of distance on a map (converting miles to kilometers.)

WHEN: Planning a trip somewhere.

WHERE: Maps.

WHY: To get an idea how far locations are from eachother.

Term
Site
Definition

WHO: Construction worker

WHAT: Area in which something is constructed.

WHEN: If a neighborhood is being constructed.

WHERE: Cities or Towns.

Term
Situation
Definition

WHO: Civilians

WHAT: Location of a place and how it connects to other areas.

WHEN: When someone wants to find a new house.

WHERE:(Towns,cities, neighborhoods)

Term
Cartography Card 2
Definition

WHY: To see how humans interact with or manipulate their environment(Build towns, cities, factories).

HOW: Cartographers make maps of different landforms and topics for all purposes(refrence maps, thematic maps).

Significance: People could start recording different landforms and different places they have been.

Term
Cultural Landscape Slide 2
Definition

HOW: People use this to create forest reserves.

Significance: Wide landscapes were created by different cultures which made each significantly different from each other.

Term
Density Card 2
Definition

WHY: To find the number of inhabitants in an area.

HOW: By counting the population in area.

Significance: So we can study a population and control its growth in a given area.

Term
Density Decay Card 2
Definition

WHY: Because the two cultures will become different if they are far away from eachother.

HOW: The distance between the populations determines how similar they are .

SIGNIFICANCE: This can influence how different cultures can be.

Term
Environmental Determinism Card 2
Definition

HOW: The environmental conditions may not be fit for humans to build a society in that area.

SIGNIFICANCE: This theory is in controversy with environmental possibilism. States humans aren't able change their surroundings and nature has limits on them.

Term
Latitude/Longitude Card 2
Definition

WHY:To find accurate coordinates on a map

HOW: GPSs, Astrolabe, Quadrant are some tools used to find latitude and longitude

SIGNIFICANCE: It revolutionized the way maps were made and how people traveled

Term
Environmental Possibilism Card 2
Definition

WHY: The need to expand.

HOW: Humans want to live somewhere they aren't supposed to live they change the environment to fit their needs.

SIGNIFICANCE: Nature can be changed or altered to fit humans needs. This theory is in controversy with environmental determinism.

Term
Scale Card 2
Definition

HOW: Converting different units of measurement.

SIGNIFICANCE: It helps people visualize distances through conversions of measurement

Term
Site card 2
Definition

WHY: For the development of a city or town.

HOW: Taking an old house and rebuilding a new house.

SIGNIFICANCE: This leads to Gentrification.
