According to Edelman (2003) there are three main features of conscious states what are they ? |
|
Definition
(i)General - Conscious states are unitary, integrated and constructed by the brain. The reflect binding of diverse modalities (ii) Informational -They show intentionality with wide-ranging contents (iii) Subjective - They reflect subjective feelings, qualia, phenomenality, mood, pleasure, and unpleasure |

According to MacLean (1970, 1990)the triune brain is ordered in a three stage heirachy what are they? |
|
Definition
1.Neomammalian (newest)
2. Paleomammalian -Limbic system as integrative in an otherwise “schizoid” brain (the mediator between the Reptilian and the Neomammalian.
3. Reptilian (oldest) |

Temporal lobe Epilepsy is highly studied as it gives great insight into consciousness. Epilepsy can give rise to short term amnesia regarding the gap in time that has occurred during the epileptic fit. A coronal section provided by Jackson (Hughlings-Jackson and Coleman, 1898, p. 588),showed that Dr Z a person with epilepsy had a lesion just lateral to the fundus of the collateral sulcus ( close to the limbic system), zone of transition between the ento- and perirhinal cortices: basically a transition area between the Neomammalian brain and the Reptilian brain . Why is this significant ?

Definition
This finding was of great significance and influenced the creation of Network-inhibition hypothesis which states that; the limbic system, the intermediate brain and the reptilian brain influence influences conscious states by affecting the Cortex. Additional to this, It states that the Reptilian brain anatomical structure is at the base of the pathway to consciousness that finishes at the Reptilian brain anatomical structures. So when this first part of the pathway(Reptilian brain) is interrupted by Temporal lobe Epilepsy this in turn affects Consciousness .OR “net-work inhibition hypothesis” argues focal temporal lobe seizure activity disrupts normal cortical–subcortical interactions, leading to depressed neocortical function and impaired consciousness. Anoetic-affective foundation may be the primal stuff from which higher forms of noetic and autonoetic consciousness emerged in Mind–Brain evolution Anoetic consciousness allows more primordial and ancient information-processing algorithms to connect up with evolutionarily more recent noetic and autonoetic consciousness |

How are Consciousness and Associativity of brain systems affected by Amnesia ?
|
|
Definition
Although the precise mechanisms for control of consciousness are not fully understood, emerging data show that conscious information processing depends on the activation of certain networks in the brain and that the impairment of consciousness is related to abnormal activity in these systems .Results support the hypothesis of strong binding mechanisms of emotional processing abilities( feelings) and autonoeticawareness, to the retrieval of (autobiographical) memories. To give meaning and to be able to use autonoetic awareness the gatekeeper to this is seen as the Peri Rhinal Cortex area and allows you to back track in time .
