Term
Threshold
Definition
The level of a sound at which an individual 50% of the time can hear it.
Term
Audiogram
Definition
A visual representation of a person’s threshold at a given frequency and intensity.
Term
Behavioral tests
Definition
Air Conduction, Bone Conduction, Speech Audiometry
Term
What is Air Conduction?
Definition
Air conduction provides an assessment of the functional integrity of the outer, middle, and inner ears.
-X- Left Ear air conduction
-O- Right Ear air conduction
Term
What is Bone Conduction?
Definition
Bone conduction reflects the function of the cochlea, regardless of the status of the outer or middle ears.
-< Or > indicate BC scores
Term
What is Speech Audiometry?
Definition
Speech Audiometry: Tells us how an auditory disorder might impact the communicative problems of daily living.
-Use Speech Audiometry to:
Measure threshold for speech
Cross-check pure-tone sensitivity
Quantify suprathreshold speech recognition ability
Estimate communicative function
-Speech Recognition Thresholds (SRT)
Ex: baseball, hotdog, airplane, toothbrush
- Speech Awareness Thresholds (SAT)
Ex: point to the baseball
- Word Recognition Scores (WRS)
Ex: “Say the word eyes. Say the word ear
Term
What are Objective tests?
Definition
Tympanometry, Acoustic Reflexes, Otoacoustic Emissions, and Electrophysiology
Term
What is Tympanometry?
Definition
Tympanometry: it is a test used to detect disorders of the middle ear.
-Air pressure in the ear canal is varied to test the condition and mobility (movement) of the tympanic membrane (ear drum)
Term
What is the Acoustic Reflexes test?
Definition
an involuntary muscle contraction that occurs in the middle ear of mammals in response to high-intensity sound stimuli.
-The acoustic reflex normally occurs only at relatively high intensities; activation for quieter sounds can indicate ear dysfunction and absence of acoustic reflex can indicate neural hearing loss.
Term
Otoacoustic Emissions
Definition
-Otoacoustic Emissions: measures an acoustic response that is produced by the inner ear (cochlea), which in essence bounces back out of the ear in response to a sound stimulus.
Term
What are the 3 types of hearing loss?
Definition
Conductive- problems with outer/middle ear
-Sensorineural- problems with the cochlea
-Retrocochlear - problems beyond the cochlea ~ including the auditory nerve, and the CANS
Term
What is normal hearing for children, adults, and adults over 65 in dB HL?
Definition
-Adults: 0-25 dB HL
-Children 0-15 dB HL
-Adults over 65 yrs- 40 dB HL
