Term
How does an AP cause CA2+ release?
Definition
A voltage sensitive protein in the T-tubules is linked to a Ca2+ channel protein in the SR. APs cause a conformational change in the protein allowing Ca2+ to flow out of the SR into the myofibril cytosol.
Term
What is the thin filament composed of?
Definition
1) Troponin
2) Actin
3) Tropoyosin
Term
What is the thick filament composed of?
Definition
Myosin.
Term
How does calcium facilitate muscle contraction?
Definition
1) Binds to troponin
2) This induces a conformational change in tropomyosin to expose the active site on actin
3) Myosin heads bind to actin forming crossbridges
4) Heads move.
Term
What substances are required for the formation of a crossbridge?
Definition
ADP and Pi.
Term
What substance is required for the dissociation of a crossbridge?
Definition
ATP whic his partially hydrolysed to ADP and Pi.
