Term
Engine cluster
Definition
Made up by four gauges next to the vent. From left to right, the two on top are the oil pressure gauge and the engine coolant temperature gauge. he two on the bottom from left to right are the voltmeter and the pyrometer.
Term
how does truck engine move the vehicle?
Definition
Produces the power (torque) to move from the force of combustion that causes pistons to move up and down. Then this movement of the pistons is changed to a circular motion by the crank-shaft. The transmissions get this circular motion to the wheels thru an assembly of gears and shafts that transmits the power from the engine through the driveline to the driving axles, the wheels, and the tires.
Term
How is the circular motion of the truck measured?
Definition
In revolutions per minutes (rpm). Engine can operate efficiently only within a rather small rpm range. Important function of the transmission is to expand the limited range of speeds the engine can turn at into a wider range of speeds needed by the wheels to move vehicle.
Term
What gears and shafts transmit force from engine to wheels?
Definition
The input shaft (aka clutch shaft or engine shaft) of the transmission is connected to the engine through the clutch. The output shaft (aka wheel shaft) is connected to the wheels through the drive shaft and drive axle. The input and output shafts are in line with each other and together are called the mains haft. The countershaft transmits the power from the input shaft to the output shaft. Counter shaft turns in opposite direction (or counter) to that of the engine. The input shaft has only one gear which drives the countershaft. Both the output shaft and countershaft have gears of various sizes on them.
