Bark: Gray-brown, corky, older tress shallowly furrowed with long narrow somewhat interlacing ridges

Form: Med sized tree, 80 ft tall, dense round crown

Wood: ipmortant in flooring and furnitire (strong, heavy, hard)

Habit: A handsome tree 60-80 ft high and 2-3 feet in diameter, dense broad rounded crown.

Bark: thin, gray, smooth, shall furrowed with age

Habit: handsome, naturalized 40-60 ft high and 2-4 ft in diamter, loose open crown with very large leaves

LEaf: allternate, simple, ovate to oval (long and thin), 2-4 inches long, two distinct sizes, decisiudous dull gray above, paler below

Fruit: small 1 seeded, ovoid, flat brown unwinged nut, attached to bse of halberd-sdhaped leafy involurce in loose strobils

Barl: thin smooth blue-gray often mottled with light or dark patches, fluted trunk an unmistakable character

Habit: large shrub or small bushy tree (40 ft high max, 1 foot in diamter) closed crown, flat topped with slender zigzag branches

Region: East of mississippi except florida and maine

Shagbark Hickory

Definition

Leaves: 8-14 inches long with 5 leaflets, obovate to ovate lanceolate, terminal 5-7 inches long and usually much longer than lateral, finely serrate margins, thick dark green above, yellow green below.

Fruit: globose and ellipsoidal, 1-2 1/2 inches long, husk, nut 4-ribbed with thick shell and sweet seed

Bark: very chracteristgic on mature turnks, 3/4-1 inch think, gray and breaking into thin plates 1-3 feet long free at one or both ernds, shagy appearance

Habit: 60-80 feet high and 1-2 feet in diamter narrow open crown and large branches

Region: East and North East, excepect coast of VA and south (no florida)

Leaf: alternate, simple, broad ovate to reniform 3-5 inches in diamter, apex actu base cordate margins entire decisouds. Looks like an upside down apple or heart!

Fruit: srtalked flat oblong russet brown legume 2-3  1/2 inches long, tipped with remnant of style.

Bark: thin gray smooth, scaly on old trunks

Habit: shrub, small tree up to 40 ft high and 2 1/2 ft in dimater, ornamental

Region: Below great lakes, MIMAL and park of texas, stop at florida

Fruit: ovoid scarlet droop 1/2 inch long in clusters of 3-4 flesh bitter, containg 2 cell pit

Bark: think, dark red brown, broken into small square blocks

Wood moderately important, very heavy and hard fine-textured (shuttles)

Habit: shrub or small tree rarely 40 ft high and 1 foot in diamter, bushy flat crown, valuable ornamental

Region: east of missippi and park of southern MIMAL, not in southern florida or north Maine, New hampshire
