Term
Issue: Bar soil w/ 0-33% slope
Definition
Treatment:
-Mulch: Bark or woodchips(if considered fire hazard, make sure it's atleast 30ft away from structure or use cobble/gravel instead); Forest servies mulch is FREE!
Term
Issue: Bare soil area in yard w/ great potential & conditions to be native vegetation bed or rain garden
Definition
-Treatment:
native/adapted drought tolerant plants
1) Four inch cobble or other border system will help hold mulch and plants in place
2)once seeds sown, add layer of mulch to protect prior to germination for protection and moisture retention.
3) If planting on slope, keep mulch moist to hold in place (sprinkler or drip)
-tip sheets:
a)Direct Seeding of Disturbed areas
b)Rain garden design manual
Term
Issue: Existing Lawn or vegetation dying/unhealthy
Definition
-treatment:
1)reseed bare areas w/ drought tolerant grasses/plants/wildflowers
2)maintain w/ organic, slow-release fertilizers(1-2 annually; fall * early spring)
3)Conserve water- water early in morning, water deeper(6-8in)
Term
Issue: Cars parking on bare soil areas are causing compaction of soils and erosion
Definition
Treatment:
-add large boulders, bollards, wood posts, and other materials to keep cars form parking in front yard and snowplows form destroying landscaping.
-restore compacted bare soil areas: break up & till w/ rake or shovel to 6-8in, add 2in compost for healthy seed plantings, apply layer of mulch after seeding, if worried about defensible space, plant low lying plants for the 0-5ft zones.
Term
Issue: Bare soil walkways are getting compacted by foot traffic.
Definition
Treatment: Stone, gravel or mulched pathway.
-a pathway directs traffic where you want it and away from sensitive areas.
-Pathway should be broken up and pervious, solid pathways will increase runoff(if prefered, make sure there's a vegetated area directly adjacent for runoff)
Term
Issue: Pathway, driveway or other impervious surface is directing significant runoff to a bare soil area.
-flat area
-sloped area
-stormwater collecting in an area
Definition
Treatment: Depending on the site and circumstances of the runoff-
a)If runoff is going to a flat area then install gravel armor 3in deep w/ border to keep rocks in place, maintain to reduce debris build up so it can capture more runoff

b) if impervious surface directs stormwater toward sloped or hill area: use rip rap to reinforce the hillside.

c) If large amount of stormwater is collecting in an area, a retention basin may be neccessary- vegetated or rock-lined retention basin to capture runoff; vegetated is a landscaped shallow depression used to slow/treat stormwater & sediment, water percolates through infiltrating native soils (can be beautifully vegetated due to water/nutrients received)
Term
Drip lines for a:
1-story roof
2-story roof
3-story roof
Definition
1-story: 18in wide w/ inside edge 6inches inside of drip line, toward foundation, at least 3in deep.

2-story: 24in w/ inside edge 6in inside drip line toward foundation, 3in deep.

3-story: 30in wide, 6in inside dripline toward foundation, 3in deep.
Term
Issue: Bare soil or evidence of erosion below roof drip lines;
Definition
Treatment: gravel drip line around under drip line areas, size and dimensions based on how many stories.
-Break up existing soil w/ hard rake or shovel before applying
-for ease of maintainence, use a border of cobble, stones, or brick around drip line to keep in place. (Avoid combustable materials)
Term
Issue: Drip line is also a pathway/walkway area
Definition
Treatment:
-create functional pathway that allows for foot traffic and helps control runoff/erosion.
-install a flagstone pathway, filling space w/ gravel, mulch or low growing veg & bordering w/ rock or treated wood
Term
Issue: Lawn, or healthy vegetation already present beneath drip line.
Definition
treatment: Lawn is adequate erosion protection, as long as it stays healthy and there's no bare soil
Term
Issue: Water exiting from gutter downspout causing soil erosion in area below.
Definition
Treatment: Install an energy dissipater under gutter downspout to dissipate water flow and prevent erosion.
Term
Issue: Driveway runoff sheets off to areas along sides of the driveway
Definition
Treatment:
-Ideally, repave and sloped to collect all surface water runoff and direct towards designed infiltration system, however just adding gravel armor ot the sides of driveways where storm water sheets off to also helps- Armor should be 24in wide and 3in deep. borders will maintain functionality and ease of maintenance.
Term
What is a swale?
Definition
-a paved depression placed in a driveway that acts as a conveyance system that directs the natural flow of stormwater toward an appropriately designed system for storage and infiltration. Simple, inexpensive and effective, BUT only recommended on a slope less than 5%.
Term
What is a Slotted Channel Drain?
Definition
-a slotted channel drain captures and conveys significant amounts of stormwater on sloped driveways to infiltration basins. Most designs are not obstructed by snow plows and are easy to keep clean.
Term
What is a driveway stormwater infiltration trench?
Definition
-An infiltration basin is a shallow depression in the ground that stores runoff from rooftops or pavement.
-allow water to slowly infiltrate back into ground.
-located adjacent to impervious surface areas like driveways, BUT in Truckee where there's steep slopes & shallow or poorly drained soil they're used in conjunction w/ swale or subsurface drain that transports runoff to an acceptable basin location for storage and infiltration.
-designs vary from prefabricated or rock infiltration. Veg basins and engineered retention ponds are other alternatives.
Term
Issue: Elevated deck/stairs/walkway w/ bare soil below
Definition
-Add a 3in layer of inorganic mulch(river rock, gravel) underneath elevated area, and line w/ containment barrier.
-Gravel should extend beyond the deck or elevated structure by 1 foot(1 1/2 to 2 if it's 2 story).
-Establishing vegetation in these areas will also help to control erosion and runoff.

-For low elevated decks/stairs/walkway add small mulch (3/4in to 1 1/2in)
Term
Issue: Bare soil or erosion on moderate slope(under 33%)
Definition
-treatment: Organic(bark, pink needles, grasses) and inorganic mulch(river rock, gravel) protect bare soil, until vegetation is established.
Term
Issue: Bare soil on 0% to 50% and greater slopes
Definition
-Rip rap rocks can stabilize soils better than vegetation or mulch alone, but work best when combined.
Term
Issue: Bare soil or erosion on EXTREMELY steep slope(over 50%)
Definition
-Treatment: Terrace slope to reduce gradient, then vegetate; Consult professionals.
