Scapular Muscles that Move the Humerus

1. Subscapularis

Origin: Clavicle (clavicle head), sternum, and costal cartilages 2nd-6th ribs and sometimes 1st-7th ribs (sternocostal head).

Insertion: Greater tubercle and lateral lip of the intertubercular sulcus of humerus.

Action: as whole, Adducts and medially rotates arm @ shoulder joint; clavicular head flexes arm, and sternocostal head extends the flexed arm to side of trunk.

Innervation: Medial and lateral Pectoral nerves

Origin: spines of inferior 6 thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae, crests of sacrum and ilium, inferior 4 ribs.

Insertion: Intertubercular sulcus of humerus.

Action: Extends, adducts, and medially rotates arm at shoulder joint; draws arm inferiorly and posteriorly.

Innervation: Thoracodorsal nerve.

Origin: Acromial extremity of clavicle (anterior fibers), acromion of scapula (lateral fibers), and spine of scapula (posterior fibers).

Insertion: Deltoid tuberosity of humerus.

Action: Lateral fibes abduct arm @ shoulder joint; Anterior fiber flex & medially rotate @ shoulder joint; Posterior Fibers Extend and laterally rotate arm @ shoulder joint

Innervation: Axillary nerve (brachial plexus)

Subscapularis

Origin: Subscapular fossa of scapula

Insertion: Lesser tubercle of humerus

Action: Medially rotates arm @ shoulder joint

Innervation: Upper and lower subscapular nerve

Origin: Supraspinous fossa of scapula (Initiates abduction)

Insertion: Greater tubercle of humerus

Action: latterally rotates and adducts arm @ shoulder joint.

Innervation: Suprascapular nerve

Origin: Infraspinous fossa of scapula

Insertion: Greater tubercle of humerus

Action: Laterally rotates and adducts arm @ shoulder joint

Innervation: Suprascapular nerve

Origin: Inferior angle of scapula

Insertion: Medial lip of interterbucular sulcus

of humerus

Action: Extends arm @ shoulder joint and assists in adduction and MEDIAL rotation of arm ant shoulder joint.

Innervation: Lower subscapular nerve

Origin: Inferior lateral border of scapula

Insertion: Greater tubercle of humerus

Action: Laterally rotates extends, and adducts arm @ shoulder joint.

Innervation: Axillary nerve

Origin: Coracoid process of scapula

Insertion: Middle of medial surface of shaft of humerus

Action: Flexes and adducts arm at shoulder joint

Innervation: Musculocutaneous Nerve (brachial plexus
