Term
Cephalexin
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Keflex

CLASS: First gen cephalosporin

INDICATION: Infection of skin/subQ tissue, Osteomyelitis, Otitis media, Resp tract infection, Strep pharyngitis, UTI

MOA: 1st gen. cephalosprin, inhibits bacterial wall synthesis of actively dividing cells by binding to one or more penicillin=binding proteins (PBPS). Works on most gram +, including non-penicillinase and penicillinase-producing-producing Staph  & Strept. Limiting acitivity on gram -, restriced to E. coli, kledsiella, proteus mirabilis.

DOSAGE FORM: Powder for susp, oral tab, oral cap

Term
Cefuroxime
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Ceftin

CLASS: 2nd gen cephalosporin

INDICATION: Acute infective exacerbation of COPD, Acute otitis media, Bronchitis (acute, secondary bact infection), Conorrhea, Inpetigo, Infection of skin/subQ tissue, Lyme disease, Pharyngitis, Sinusitis, Tonsilitis, UTI

MOA: 2nd gen. cephalosprin, activity is >cefazolin but <cefazolin, against Haemophilus influenzae, includes β-lactamase-producing strains. Activity of cefuroxime against stph aureus is slightly >cefazolin

DOSAGE FORM: Powder for susp, Oral tab

Term
Cefdinir
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Omnicef CLASS: 3rd gen cephalosporin INDICATION: Acute otitis media, Bronchitis (acute-secondary bacterial infection), Community aquired pneumonia, Infection of skin/subQ tissue

MOA: 3rd gen cephalosporin with activity agains # of gram + & gram - bacteria including β-lactamase producing

DOSAGE FORM: Powder for susp, Capsule

Term
Gatifloxacin Opthalmic
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Zymar CLASS: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

INDICATION: Bacterial conjunctivitis

MOA: Inhib bacterial topoisomerase II and IV, Highly active against aerobic, gram-neg bacilli. Poor activity against streptococci and anaerobes

DOSAGE FORM: Opth solution

Term
Moxifloxacin Opthalmic
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Vigamox CLASS: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

INDICATION: Bacterial conjunctivitis

MOA: Inhibits bacterial topoisomerase II and IV. Highly active against aerobic, gram-neg bacilli, especially enterobacteriaceae

DOSAGE FORM: Opth sol

Term
Ciprofloxacin Otic
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Cipro HC, Cetraxal

CLASS: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

INDICATION: Otitis externa-acute

MOA: A fluoroquionolone inhibts bacterial DNA gyrase. Its is highly active against aerobic, Gram - bacili, enterobatceriaceae with MIC of 0.5-1 mg/L. Recent reports indicate increasing resistance in S. aureus. Poor activity against Strept and anaerobes

DOSAGE FORM: Opth susp

Term
Ciprofloxacin
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Cipro CLASS: Fluoroquinone antibiotic INDICATION: Anthrax, Bacterial prostatitis, Bronchitis-lower resp tract infection/infection of the bone, skin, soft tissue, sinusitis, UTI

MOA: Fluoroquinolone inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, Highly active against anerobic, gram-neg bacilli

DOSAGE FORM: Powder for susp, oral tab, oral cap

Term
Amoxicillin/Potassium Clavulanate
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Augmentin CLASS: B-Lactam antibiotic INDICATION: Acute otitis media, Community aquired pneumonia, lower resp tract infection, Sinusitis, Infection of skin/subQ tissue, Infectious disease of genitourinary system

MOA: Amoxicillin is semisyntheitic penicillin derivative. Typically against Strept, Enterococcus, Staph, and Enterobacteriaaceae. Not effective against β-lactamase producing bacteria. Clavulanic acid has weak antibacterial activity but potent inhibitor of plasmid-mediated β-lactamases

DOSAGE FORM: Tab, Chew tab, Suspension

Term
Amoxicillin
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Amoxil

CLASS: B-lactam antibiotic INDICATION: Acute otitis media, Lower resp tract infection, Pharyngitis-tonsillitis, Strep pharyngitis, Ear/nose/throat infection, H Pylori GI tract infection, Infection of skin/subQ tissue

MOA: Inhib biosynthesis of bacterial cell wall mucopeptide. Active against streptococcus, enterococcus, staphylococcus, enterobacteriaceae. Not against B-lactamase producing bacteria

DOSAGE FORM: Cap, chew tab, drop, susp

Term
Penicillin
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Veetids

CLASS: Natural penicillin antibiotic

INDICATION: Bacterial endocarditis, prophylacxis in pt w/congenital heart disease or rheumatic/aquired valvular heart disease, Otitis media (pneumococcal), Streptococcal pharyngitis

MOA: Active against most Gram + and some Gram - organism, notably Neisseria sp, interfering with late stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis; resistance is cause by bacterial production of β-lactamase

DOSAGE FORM: Oral tab, Powder for susp, Powder for sol

Term
Levofloxacin
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Levaquin

CLASS: Fluoroquinolone antibiotic

INDICATION: Bacterial prostatitis, Bacterial sinusitis-acute, Bronchitis-chronic/acutebacterial exacerbation, Community aquired pneumonia, Infection of skin/subQ tissue, Pyelonephritis-acute

MOA: Inhib bacterial DNA dyrase (enzyme responsible for unqinding DNA for transcription and supercoiling of DNA for packging into chromosomal subunits). Highly active against aerobic, gram-neg bacilli

DOSAGE FORM: Oral sol, oral tab

Term
Moxifloxacin
Definition

BRAND/GENERIC: Avelox

CLASS: Flouroquinolone antibiotic

INDICATION: Acute infective exacerbation of COPD, Bacterial sinusitis-acute, Community aquired pneumonia, Infection of skin/subQ tissue

MOA: Inhib topoisomerase II and IV. Highly active against aerobic, gram-neg bacilli especially enterobacteriaceae. (Poor activity against streptococci and anaerobes)

DOSAGE FORM: Opthalmic Solution
