Term
Levothyroxine (Synthroid T4) |
Definition
is a synthetic (man-made) version of the principle thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4) that is made and released by the thyroid gland. Levothyroxine is approved to treat hypothyroidism and to suppress thyroid hormone release in the management of cancerous thyroid nodules and growth of goiters. administered in small amounts 0.1 to 0.2 mg/day |
Term
Liothryonine (Cytomel- T3) |
Definition
is used to treat hypothyroidism (low production of thyroid hormone) in adults and children. Prolonged hypothyroidism can result in a condition called myexoedema in which patients develop swollen lips, thickened nose, and unusual deposits of material in the skin that are dry and waxy. These deposits also may appear in body tissues other than the skin. Liothyronine also is used in a test of the thyroid gland to determine if the thyroid is functioning normally. |
Term
Liotrix (combination of T3 and T4) |
Definition
is used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It replaces or provides more of a certain natural substance (thyroid hormone) that is normally produced by the thyroid gland. 12.5 mcgT3 and 50 mcgT4 a ration of 1:4. |

Definition

results from untreated hyperthyroidism. It is usually brought on by a stress such as trauma or infection. Complications include congestive heart failure and pulmonary edema can develop rapidly and lead to death. This is an emergency condition. Call 911 or another emergency number if you have hyperthyroidism and experience symptoms of thyroid storm. Symptoms are severe and may include: Agitation, Change in alertness (consciousness), Confusion, Diarrhea, Fever, pounding heart (tachycardia), Restlessness, Shaking, Sweating |

Definition
to stop production of hormone gland, resulting in hypothyroidism and patient must begin thyroid replacement. |
Term
Definition
reverses hyperthyroidism requires an average of 6 weeks to lower T4 levels to normal and is often given before radioactive iodine treatment. can be taken once per day |
Term
Definition
*reverses hyperthyroidism must be taken two to three times per day *used to treat thyroid storm or toxicosis *inhibits process necessary to make precursors of T3 and T4 *does not effect release of thyroid already stored in the gland *used for prep before surgery or I131 treatment |
Term

Definition
is administered orally as sodium 131-I in solution or a capsule. The radioiodine is rapidly incorporated into the thyroid, and its beta-emissions result in extensive local tissue damage. The net effect is destruction of thyroid function over a period of 6 to 18 weeks. |
