Mechanism: inhibit thyroid peroxidase, inhibits deiodinase; prevents synthesis of thyroid hormone and conversion of T4 to T3
Indications: Graves', hyperthyroidism, toxic multinodular goiter, acutely prior to thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine; PREFERRED IN PREGNANT FEMALES
Contraindications: allergy
Adverse effects: severe liver injury and acute liver failure, inc. risk of bleeding w/ oral anticoags (dec. prothrombin) |

Contraindications: pregnancy (crosses placenta and breast milk, assoc. w/ malformations)

Mechanism: inhibtion of iodide uptake, inhibit iodination and organification, inhibit thyroid hormone release
Indications: emergency tx of thyroid storm, thyroid protection during tx (reduce size and vascularity before surgery), thyroid protect from nuclear accidents and emergencies
Contraindications: allergy
Adverse effects: hypothyroidism, may worsen toxic goiter symptoms
Pharmacokinetics: Absorption - oral, reduced to iodide in intestine then absorbed; or IV Distribution: rapid, decrease TH in 24hrs, but reversible and transient |
