Oral Stage (0-18 months)

  • Main source of pleasure is the mouth
  • Sucking and rooting reflexes very important
  • Fixation in this stage can cause problems eating, drinking, biting nails or talking to much/too little

Anal Stage (ages 1-3)

  • Major conflict is potty training
  • Fixation in this stage can caues one of two responses:
  • Anal retentitive: OCD, neat (caused by parent being too particular during toilet training)
  • Anal expulsive: messy, good-hearted (caused by parent being too lenient about toilet training)
