Term
what is articular cartilage?
Definition
the thin, smooth, bluigh-white layer that covers the epiphyses' surface and aids in smooth movement
Term
what is the haversian system and what does it contain?
Definition
the haversian system is a unit of compact bones and it contains:
a= haversian blood vessels
b= lamellae- concentric layers of a hard matrix
c= lacunae- located between the lamellae and are fluid filled spaces that dontaint he osteocytes
d= canaliculi- tiny canals that contain blood vessels that run from the HCC to the lacunae
Term
whaich bones are the last to ossify?

What is the process of ossification?
Definition
Sternum, Clavicles, Vertebrae

ossification is the process of cartilage converting into solid bone
Term
what covers the diaphysis?
Definition
periosteum- a dense white fibrous tissue that functions in muscle atachemnt and bone growth and repair
Term
whats the shaft and ends of a bone called
Definition
shaft= diaphysis
ends= episyses
Term
what are the bones classified by shape?
Definition
long bones- arms and legs
short bones- wrists and ankles
irregular bones- zygomatic arch
flat bones- ribs and strnum
sesamoid- patella
Term
what are the 3 kinds of arthritis?
Definition
rhematoid
osteoarthritis
gouty arthritis
Term
what covers the proximal + distal bone ends to help form the joint?
Definition
a joint capsule
Term
what are bursas?
Definition
saclike structures that are filled with synovial fluid
Term
which membrane lines the inner surface of the joint capsule and wht does it produce?
Definition
synovial membrane ---> synovial fluid which aids in joint lubircation and "shock absorber" between bones.
Term
What is a joint?
Definition
a connection between two or more bones or between caratilage and bone.
Term
which cartilage is the last to ossify in long bone?
Definition
the epiphseal plate
Term
what are the three classifications of joints?
Definition
slightly movable
freely movable
immovable
Term
what are the 11 types of fractures?
Definition
pott's
colles'
impacted
greenstick
spiral
transverse
oblique
comminuted
open/compound
closed/simple
pathologic
Term
what is a blood clot called?
Definition
hematoma
Term
what is a callus?
Definition
osteoclast phagocytize tissue debri and the new osteoblast produces bew osteocytes along with a fibrocartilage. This is a callus. lol
Term
what is required to make new haversian canals?
Definition
calcium and magnesium; vitamins C and D
Term
decribe the 206 bones in the human body
=
Definition
axial skeleton- contains 80 bones and includes the .skull .ribs .vertebral column . sternum

appendicular skeleton- contains 126 bones including the .arms .legs .pectoral girdle .pelvic girdle
Term
give examples of the three joint classifications=
Definition
freely movable -ball and socket (shoulder and hip)-hinge (elbow and knee) -pivot (atlas and axis)
slightly movable - gliding (vertebrae, sternum, carpals and tarsals) -combined hunge and gliding (temporomandibular)
immovable -sutures= interlocks skull bones
Term
what are the "soft spots" between the sutures called?
Definition
fontanels
