“Very little proportion of the fear of god in his heart”

Definition

The Laird of Dalcastle (EN)

- Unlike the Wringhims, the Laird has little room in his life for religion, and fills it instead with "feasting, dancing piping and singing". He lives for his immediate pleasure, and is unconcerned by the prospect of his afterlife.

Term

“The laird went to caress her, but she turned away her head”

Definition

The Laird of Dalcastle (EN)

- The spurned affections of the Laird. He genuinely does care for his wife, but she treats him coldly and with contempt. She despises him and his "sinful" lifestyle, sees them, as Robert puts it in his narrative, as "Purity and corruption".

Term

“the spirit of the old laird was broken by the blow”

Definition
Following his son's death, the Laird goes to peices. He is devastated, and his reaction to the event serves to humanise him, to make him more sympathetic a character to the reader.
