Term
Antibody (Ab)
Definition
A type of protein molecule known as immunoglobulin produced by the B-lymphocyte. They bind to specific antigens to destroy or deactivate them.
Term
Antigen (Ag)
Definition
Any substance capable of triggering an immune response. This can be microorganisms such as fungi, spores, bacteria, or viruses. It can also be a toxin, a poisonous substance, or an unhealthy cell from the body, such as a cancer cell.
Term
Autoimmue diseases
Definition
Diseases caused when the cells of immune system mistakenly attack healthy cells of the body.
Term
Bone marrow
Definition
The origin of all blood cells. These cells develop into B-cells, Killter T-cells, granulocytes, red blood cells, and platelets, as well as immature T-cells that migrate to the thymus gland to fully develop.
Term
Cell-meditated response
Definition
An immune response involving the T-lymphocytes. The cytotoxic, or Killer, T-cell must be bound to an infected cell to kill it. Likewise, a Helper T-cell must be bound to an unhealthy cell to initiate an appropriate immune response.
Term
Granulocytes
Definition
White cells involved in the non-specific immune response. These cells all contain storage organelles of powerful chemicals that are released in the presence of a harmful antigen.
Term
Humoral immune response
Definition
An immune response involving the antibodies produced by the B-lymphocyte. Antibodies can bind to and deactivate a harmful antigen without the presence of a B-lymphocyte.
Term
Immunoglobulins
Definition
Protein molecules that identify cells of the body, distinguishing them from those that are not.
Term
Leukocytes
Definition
White blood cells of all types.
Term
Lymphatic system
Definition
Composed of vessels, nodes and fluid. It bathes cells, flushes out harmful antigens, and serves as a conduit for the cells of the immune system to do their work.
Term
Lymphocytes
Definition
The white cells involved in the specific immune response. The are two major types.
Term
B-cells and T-cells
Definition
Two major types of lymphocytes.
Term
Macrophages
Definition
White cells that surround and engulf foreign antigens and clean up cellular debris. They ingest foreign materials and present them to other cells of the immune system to initiate an immune response.
Term
Antigen-presenting cells
Definition
Another name for Macrophages
Term
Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC)
Definition
The cluster of immunoglobulins present in every cell of the body which distinguies cells of the body from those that are not.
Term
Monocyte
Definition
A white cell of the non-specific immune system which will eventually develp into a macrophage.
Term
Spleen
Definition
A body organ that filters the blood for harmful antigens. Also produces B-cells and T-cells, and stores macrophages and red blood cells.
Term
Stem cell
Definition
Cells of the bone marrow that are capable of developing into any type of blood cell.
Term
Thymus
Definition
An organ of the immune system where T-cell lymphocytes develop. It becomes non-funtional as one moves into adulthood.
