Term
Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes
Definition
nucleus vs. no nucleus
many specialized organelles in cytoplasm vs. ribosomes only
reaches 1m vs. smaller than 1um
seen in both multicellular and unicellular organisms vs. seen only in unicellular organisms
BOTH HAVE or can have:cell membrane, cell wall, DNA
Term
Cell Theory
Definition
1. all living things are composed of cells
2. cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
3. new cells are produced from pre-existing cells
Term
Endosymbiosis
Definition
1. a prokaryote and a eukaryote once developed an endosybiotic relationship in which the prokaryote was inside the eukaryote
2. they evolved into mitochondria and chloroplasts
Evidence: they both have two membranes, similar functions, their own DNA, and they must divide instead of being synthesized.
Term
Diffusion
Definition
movement of solute from high concentration to low concentration
Term
Osmosis
Definition
the diffusion of water accross a selectively permeable membrane
Term
Hypertonic solution
Definition
outside of cell has higher concentration than inside of cell; water leaves cell
Term
Isotonic solution
Definition
there is an equilibrium, the water moves in and out of the cell
Term
Hypotonic solution
Definition
outside of cell has lower concentration than inside, water moves into cell, possibly causing it to explode
Term
fascilitated diffusion
Definition
movement of large or charged molecules, through protein channels, from high concentration to low concentration
Term
passive transport
Definition
transport of molecules that does not require the cell to use energy
Term
passive processes
Definition
simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis
Term
active transport
Definition
transport of molecules that does require the cess to use energy
Term
active transport includes...
Definition
endocytosis (pinocytosis and phagocytosis), exocytosis
Term
endocytosis
Definition
movement into the cell by pinching of the cell membrane around material, creating a vacuole
Term
pinocytosis
Definition
cell "drinking" of fluids
Term
phagocytosis
Definition
cell "eating"
Term
exocytosis
Definition
movement out of the cell; the cell may make things needed somewhere else in the body or produce waste, both of which need to be pumped out; the waste, protein etc. is packaged in a vacuole that fuses with the cell membrane and contents are released
