Black, white and red; the colors of the Nazi Flag. In the Book Thief by Mark Zusak, he introduces our narrator, death who "vacations" and see's things in color. Excitement, loss, compassion, adrenaline, desperation, pain, consolidation, punishment, and discoloration are all examples of "red" in this novel. When you are excited, desperate, or having an adrenaline rush, there are sparks igniting in your head telling you how to feel, how things are, and how they seem. When you experience loss, punishment, and pain you feel the hurt, you see the blood, and just simply fall apart inside, even if it's only slightly. Consolidation and compassion show you love, hope, and knowing that there are others there with you, and everyone is brought together in some form or another; it shows your passion. Finally there is discoloration. Red and discolorization don't neccessarily go together, but Death has you feeling and thinking that things that aren't truly seen as "red" are being portrayed as "red". The main color on the Nazi Flag is red, it surrounds the entire center of the flag, therefore showing that even if you don't think something is "red" everything is based off of red. There are burnings, bombings, destruction in general, everything after these horrific things are mostly caused because of these "red" ideals. It's a continuous chain reaction. So this project will prove that the color red is mostly seen clearly in times of excitement, loss, compassion, adrenaline, desperation, pain, consolidation, punishment, and discoloration. |
