Why are satin and twill weaves different than plain weave fabrics?
Definition
Twill and satin weaves are more complex and require a greater number of harnesses on the loom than plain weave fabrics
Term
Twill Weave
Definition
Each warp (or filling) yarn floats across two or more filling (or warp) yarns with a progression of interlacings by one to the right or left to form a distinct diagonal line or wale; 2/2 or 2/1 are the most common
Term
Characteristics of Twill Weaves
Definition
Have a technical face and back

The technical face is the side of the fabric with the most pronounced wale and has an interesting surface and texture

(face: the fashion side of the fabric)

Seldom printed or made in sheers

Soil is less evident due to wales on the surface

RIGHT HAND TWILL: Direction of twill usually goes from lower left to upper right in wool and wool-like fabrics

LEFT HAND TWILLS: from lower right to upper left in cotton and cotton-like fabrics

(R is closer to W and L is closer to C)

Fabrics are softer and more pliable due to fewer interlacings

Better wrinkle recovery
Term
Even-Sided (Reversible)Twill Fabrics
Definition
Exposes the same amount of warp and filling

2/2 Tills- Surah, Serge, Herringbone, Houndstooth
Term
Warp-Faced Twill Fabrics
Definition
Predominance of warp yarns on the right side of the fabric which makes the fabrics stronger and more durable

2/1 Twills-Denim, Flocked denim, Gabardine, Cavalry Twill

Warp Faced: face of fabric comes off
Term
Satin Weave Defined
Definition
Each warp yarn floats over 4 filling yarns and interlaces with the 5th filling yarn, with a progression of lacings by 2 to the right or to the left

4x1=warp faced
1x4=Filling faced
Term
Satin Weave Characteristics
Definition
Smooth and lustrous with long floats
Fewer interlacing; ravels easily
wrinkle resistant
definite face and back
Unbalanced
High Count gives body, strength, and wind repellency
Low count is weak and prone to slippage (especially with filament yarns)
Term
