Term
General mechanism and structure of tetracyclines |
|
Definition
Broad spectrum static for G+/- and some intracellular organisms
lipid soluble
enterohepatic recylcing
Mechanism: inhibits binding of aminoacyl tRNAto acceptor site |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
short acting (half-life 6-8hrs)
for acne |
|
|
Term
Demeclocycline (Declomycin) |
|
Definition
Intermediate acting (half-life 12 hours)
used to treat chronic dilutional hyponatremia in the syndrome of inappropriate ADH (SIADH) - inhibits protein kinase in ducts on which ADH depends |
|
|
Term
|
Definition
long acting (1/2 life - 16-18 hours) - highly lipophilic
oral & IV
95% absorbed
significant excretion in feces |

Term
|
Definition
long acting (1/2 life - 16-18 hours) - highly lipophilic
treat acne but assoociated with pulmonary complications
- anti-inflammatory - blocks NO and activation of microglia (these are associated with inflammation)
- decreased neuronal damage (good for stroke victims)
- might be neuroprotective for degenerative diseases
- reports of SLE like symptoms (goes away with d/c)
- can cause nail, skin, & sclera pigmentation

Side effects for tetracyclines |
|
Definition
- upset GI - take with food
- slowed growth
- brown discoloration of teeth (permanent)
- photosensitivity (especially demeclocycline)
- Expired Rx - Fanconi Like Syndrome (nephrotoxic product)
- Absorption of all tetracyclines is decreased with dairy products and antacids (chelation, combines with Ca and gets excreted)

|
Term
|
Definition
parenteral, long acting derivative of minocycline with similar side effects
greater activity vs tetracycline-sensitive G+/- and MRSA.
Used for complicated skin and intraabdominal infections |
