*1975-Khmer Rouge invasions - capture and kill dancers

*after Khmer Rouge, only about 35 dancers left (they need to pass down dances)

*worshipping dance. delicacy and detail, ornate dress

*hard for us to understand because we didn't grow up in culture

*why preserve the dance? preserve history

*they believe that through embodying animal they are hunting, it will sacrifice itself to them

*Snake Dance - snakes in their mouths - snakes were considered the brothers of the gods of cloud and rain - rain dance

*Ghost Dance - lasted for hours w/o food, drink, or sleep; bring back buffalo herds - tribes are being separated by US - all will be restored if they performed this dance: 1. all tribes come together, 2. White clothes

*Wounded Knee- didn't fight back because they thought the white clothes were pullet proof

*Pow-wow: conferences to protect culture

P: military strategy w/ dance - when enemy would get there, young women would line up and dance. The warriors would gather behind. then, the girls would part, and warriors would burst through (mbende)

R:European missionaries - a man went to them and said he had a dream of the zezuru doing mbende for baby Jesus under new name: Jerusarema - it worked- they were allowed to do it

*evolved during slave trade in Brazil - slaves had no self defense - began to train themselves for combat - slave owners would prohibit training, so they disguised defense as a dance
