Massaccio - (1424) Tribute Money
Massaccio divides this painting in to three scenes. In the center, surrounded by his deciples, Jesus is confronted by a tax collector at the entrance to a Roman city. Jesus tells Peter to go to the river and retieve a coin from the mouth of a fish. At the right Peter is paying the tax collector. Massaccio uses new techniques giving the landscape depth in the background. The paining was actually damaged in a fire. |
