Augustan rules:

1) First follow Nature(what does ‘nature’ mean?)

2)Survey the whole – see big picture, not just indiv. parts

3)objectivity & generality rather than bias and subjectivity

4) Overall harmony & uniformity better than interesting details or quirks

5) Imitate the ancients(Greeks & Romans)

6)Restrain false wit but use true, which is “nature to advantage dressed” –hmm

7)The sound must seem an echo to the sense – form should mimic content and how a line sounds should reinforce what it says
