Definition
- Protects the right of free speech, religion, and press. - Gives rights to pititon, and critcize the government. - Limits: - Slander- Speech intended to damage one's reputaion. - Libel- Slander in written form.

- The right of security - “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a Free State.” - Militia- armed forces made up of citizens

- Prohibits the govt to require the quartering of troops

Definition
- Authorities must have a specific reason to conduct search and seizure
- A search and an arrest must be based upon probable cause
- Law enforcement must have a search warrant or arrest warrant signed by a judge

Fifth Admendment
Definition
- Protections for people accused of crimes
1. No one can be tried for a serious crime without sufficient evidence against them
2. A person cannot be tried for the same crime twice
3. No one can be force to testify against themselves “I plead the fifth”
4. Govt can’t deprive anyone of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness without due process of law
- Eminent domain – If govt seizes land you must be compensated

Definition
- Right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury
- Persons must know the charges against them

Seventh Admendment
Definition
- A trial by jury in federal courts will decide all property disputes worth more than $20
- In other words: if you are owed money (more than $20) you can sue the person that owes you the money and the case will be decided.

- All other rights not mentioned in the Constitution are “retained by the people”
- This limits the power government
