Note the central umbilication... that is the hallmark of these lesions.

NO.  These are mongolian spots... make sure you document them on your nursery and well child physical exams!

What is this, how would you treat it?

Definition

Impetigo

 

Caused by S. aureus or group A Strep

 

Localized infection can be treated with mupirocin (Bactroban) ointment

 

Severe/widespread cases will need po antibiotic therapy

What is your diagnosis?

Definition

Eczema in an infant.

 

Infants tend to have more facial and central/truncal involvment with their eczema

 

Mainstay of treatment is moisturizing, mild detergents/soaps and itch control with Benadryl.

"the itch that rashes"

 

Topical steroids may be necessary for short periods to get control.  Don't use stronger than 1% hydrocortisone on the face!

Definition

Tinea versicolor

Spagetti and Meatballs on KOH on the boards

 

Treat with Selsun

What is this rash.. what is causing it?

Definition

Contact dermatitis from nickel in the belt buckle or jeans snap.

 

Try to get rid of direct contact

 

Treat with topical steroid... sometimes medium strength such as triamcinolone or fluticasone may be needed for 7-10 days

A mild cold for a couple days and then this!

Definition

Lace like rash on cheeks... also likes the backs of the arms... but can occur anywhere.

 

Sometimes called "the slapped cheek virus"

 

Caused by Parvovirus

 

Contagious only before the rash develops.

 

Supportive care.

 

Ask about 1st trimester pregnant caregivers

Cause unknown

 

Goes away on its own in 6-8 weeks

 

No good treatment
