two men were sent from the Israelites camp to spy out the lane of Jericho. They came to the house of Rahab the prostitute. She hid them when the king’s men came to arrest them. She had hidden them on her roof underneath the flask stalks, and she sent the king’s men out of the city, saying that the spies had already left. Rahab did this because she had heard of the God of the Israelites. She let the spies down from her window using a cord, and she hung a scarlet cord there so when the Israelites attacked the city, they would see the cord and save Rahab’s family. |

The Lord told Joshua that he had already given him the city of Jericho, but for seven days the people were to march around the city with the priests blowing their trumpets, and the people shouting with the trumpets. For seven days the people did this, but they did not shout yet. But on the seventh day, they all shouted, and the walls came crashing down. Achan disobeyed the Lord’s command and took for himself some of the sacred things, and so the Lord was angry at Israel and let Ai defeat them. Joshua had all the tribes come before him so the Lord could reveal what tribe stole the items. It was Achan, from the tribe of Judah. He admitted his sins, so he, his family, and all his possessions were stoned and burned, and a heap of stones was piled up over them. |

When the people/leaders of Gibeon heard what had happened to Jericho, they were afraid and plotted to deceive Joshua. They dressed up in ragged clothes and went to Joshua in their disguises. They said they were from a foreign land and asked to make a covenant of peace with Joshua. Joshua agreed, but did not receive council from the Lord. After 3 days, Joshua realized that they were neighbors with the Gibeonites. He kept his promise, but made the Gibeonites cutters of wood and drawers of water for the congregation |

The angel of the Lord came to Gibeon and said that he was to lead the people in victory over the Midianites. But Gibeon thought he was weak, and did not believe the Lord. He asked for a sign, so the Lord touched the meat and cakes and fire sprang from the rock. Gibeon obeyed the Lord and tore down the altar of Baal, but he was too embarrassed to do it during the day, and did it at night instead. |
