body processes we are not aware of

ie: heartbeat

Term
PRECONSCIOUS LEVEL
Definition

information you are not currently thinking about but could if asked to

ie: what are you doing this weekend?

Term
SUBCONSCIOUS LEVEL
Definition
Information we are unaware but we know exists because of behavior (ie: subliminal messages)
Term
UNCONSCIOUS LEVEL
Definition
  • materially that is unacceptable to our mind so we repress it
    • believed by psychoanalytical psychologists
Term
SLEEP
Definition
state of consciousness
Term
SLEEP CYCLE

  • increased heart rate
  • muscle paralysis
Term
SLEEP DISORDERS

    • manifest content: story line of dream
    • latent content: hidden meaning behind dream
Term
ACTIVIATION SYNTHESIS THEORY
Definition
  • dreams are a biological phenomenon in which our brain creates dreams as a response to neurological energy released during sleep by the brain stem
Term
INFORMATION PROCESSING THEORY
Definition
  • Dreams are a way to process information that occurred during the day
Term
POSTHYPNOTIC SUGGESTION
Definition
suggestion that a hypnotized person act a certain way when they are brought out of hypnosis
Term
POSTHYPNOTIC AMNESIA
Definition
people report forgetting events while hypnotized
Term
ROLE THEORY OF HYPNOSIS
Definition
people are not in an alternate conscious state but rather acting out the role of a hypnotized person
Term
STATE THEORY OF HYPNOSIS
Definition
during hypnosis people become less aware of their environment around them
Term
DISSOCIATION THEORY OF HYPNOSIS
Definition
Consciousness is split involuntarily.  One half listens to hypnotist while other half is aware of reality.
Term
PSYCHOACTIVE DRUG
Definition
  • chemicals change chemistry of brain
  • create altered state of consciousness
Term
AGONISTS
Definition
  • drugs that mimick neurotransmitters
  • ex: opiates mimick endorphins
Term
ANTAGONISTS
Definition
  • Drugs that block neurotransmitters
Term
TOLERANCE
Definition
  • body needs more of the drug to create same high
    • physiological change
Term
WITHDRAWAL
Definition
  • physiological symptoms felt when drug is with held
    • vary from drug to drug
    • common symptoms: headache, itching, irritability, etc.

  • Slow down the body processes: heart rate, respiration , etc.
    • Common Depressants: alcohol, barbitutrates, antianxiety drugs, opiates
    • Side-effects: slowed reaction time, slowed brain processes, changed behavior

Term
