Term
What are the parts of the pyramidal tract? |
Definition
Corticonuclear, corticobulbar and corticospinal tracts. |
Term
What does the corticospinal tract carry? |
Definition
It is a descending tract carrying axons from the cortex to the spinal cord to modulate alpha motor neurons (either directly or via interneurons)

Term
Rubrospinal Tract
Organization?

Crossover? |
Definition
Originates in the red nucleus of rostral midbrain. Descending tract that doesn't go below cervical. Follows corticospinal closely. Flexor biased motor signals to arms and forearm.
Crosses near origin in brainstem |
Term
Vestibulospinal Tract
Origin and termination?
Information carried?
Definition
Descending tract from vestibular nuclues to spinal cord anterior to ventral horn. Carries extensor biased motor signals for body posture and orientation. Main input is from the vestibular apparatus in cerebellum. |
Term
Reticulospinal Tract

Cross over?
Definition
Descending tract from reticular formation in brainstem down the spinal cord anterior edge anterior of ventral horn.
Carries extensor biased motor innervation of paravertebral and gait muscles.
Lateral reticulospinal may cross over but the medial may not. |

Organization?
Crossover? |
Definition
aka Visceromotor system
Descends from hypothalamus along the side of the IMLCC in the white matter. Provides autonomic innervation for the IMLCC. Does not cross over. |

Definition
3 divisions. Anterior, posterior and cuneate. A and P are on lateral wall of spinal cord. Ascending system that carries unconcious proprioception to the cerebellum. A and P carry info from lower extremity. Cuneate carries info from upper extremity. P and cuneate provide info from ipsilateral individual muscles. Anterior carries info from contralateral whole limbs but double crosses. |
