Term
Purpose of Speech Audiometry
Definition
Attempt to measure the ability to understand everyday conversational communication, aid to diagnosis, guide to rehab
Term
Testing with Recorded Speech
Definition
1000hz calibration tone provided on recording, balance calibration tone on VU meter to 0, standardized
Term
Testing with Live Voice
Definition
Montiored live voice (MLV), controlled vocal effect, adjust microphone sensitivity to have the speech balanced at 0 on VU meter, more flexibility/control
Term
dbSPL
Definition
Compare to a physical reference
Term
dbHL
Definition
compares an individuals sensitivity with that of the normal population
Term
dbSL
Definition
compare to person's own threshold
Term
Speech Recognition Threshold
Definition
Lowest Level at which a speech signal is intelligible enough to be recognized or identified 50% of the time, should be within 6 of PTA for good reliability though up to 10dB is fair
Term
Spondee Word
Definition
A two syllable word pronounced with equal stress on both syllables, compound words, repeated for SRT
testing, carrier phrase optional
Term
Speech Detection/Awareness Threshold (SDT/SAT)
Definition
The hearing level at which a listener can just detect the presence of an ongoing speech signal 50% of the time, spondees or continuous discourse, done when you can't get a SRT
Term
Most Comfortable Loudness (MCL)
Definition
The hearing level designated by the listener as the most comfortable listening level for speech, usually between 40-55dB, CHL 30-40dB above average, SNHL not high above SRT because of recruitment
Term
Uncomfortable Loudness Level (UCL)
Definition
The sound pressure level (often in dbHL) at which speech becomes uncomfortably loud, continuous discourse, useful in hearing aid fitting
Term
Dynamic Range (DR)
Definition
Range of usable hearing, UCL-SRT=DR
Term
Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)
Definition
The difference in decibels between a signal and a noise presented to the same ear, when speech is greater than noise=positive SNR, when noise is greater than speech=negative SNR
Term
Recruitment
Definition
A large increase in the perceived loudness of a signal produced by relatively small increases in intensity above threshold, SNHL
Term
Word Recognition Score
Definition
The percentage of words that a patient can perceive and respond to correctly when presented at a given suprathreshold level
Term
Phonetically Balanced Words (PB)
Definition
Sounds occur with the same frequency as they do in a representative sample of English speech, monosyllabic
Term
Redundancy vs HL Sensitivity
Definition
The more redundant the less sensitive it is toward the hearing loss
Term
WRS Types of Tests
Definition
Closed set tests, nonsense-syllable tests, sentence tests, high frequency word lists
Term
Performance Intensity Function (PI)
Definition
A measure of how intelligibility of speech grows with an increase in the presentation level
Term
PB Max
Definition
Maximum recognition score the client can obtain when speech is presented at a sufficiently loud level
Term
Audibility Index (AI)
Definition
Aka articulation index or speech intelligibility index, a measure of the proportion of speech cues that are audible, expressed at proportion between 0 and 1
Term
Reasons for the PTA and SRT Not Coinciding
Definition
Not understanding directions, equipment problems, intentionally claiming loss, psychological reasons
