born in La Habana, Cuba in 1853. @ 17 exiled to Spain for opposition to colonial rule. Graduated from the university in Zaragoza while in exile. 1878 returned to Cuba under general amnesty but conspired against Spain and was soon banished. 1881 to 1895 lived in NYC. Joined Cuban independence movement in 1895. Started literay career in Mexico City before 1878. Believed Cuba should be free and not be under any other countries' control. Believed justice and freedom were the cornerstones for government. Died in fight for Cuban Independence. Monument in Central Park Havana, Cuba honoring his memory and all he stood for. |
