Definition
  • engagement in certain activities, separation from former roles and creating a new role.
  • Also include lots of changes and continuities in identity.
  • The use of objects to obtain a continuous identity

  3. PERSONAL IDENTITY
Definition
1- Social Identity is Meanings others or society perceive that you attach to your role.

2- Self-identity is an identity that begins from adolescent years and it's continuous throughout your life as you get older and start working in different environment.

The reconstruct of biographies also plays a role in self-Identity.

Individuals striving to change how they use to be in the past to better themselves and their self-identity.


3- Personal Identity- It's determined based on the meanings given to someone when considering their biographical information.
It's possible to have many social identity but one can only have one personal identity.

Anchors & Markers

Definition

Anchors- Object representing past such as childhood and adolescents years.

Markers- Objects with many meanings and the meanings are bound to change based on what's included in the individual's biography.

Definition

stigma is the distinguishing mark of the categories. 

Men & women have different objects as anchors and markers.

  • Example: 8 men out of 10 men and women are likely to be baseball cards collectors.
  • 8 women out of 10 men and women are likely to be collectors of barbie dolls.

"Mixed Marriage" Acceptance becomes clear when interracial couple only sees it as "marriage"

Example: when a couple isn't getting married for all the wrong reasons.

Definition

The interest of whites seeking interracial partners-

  • Desire of partner's different culture
  • "exotic" nature of desired partner.
White supremacist- Thinks that whites are superior compared to other people from different racial backgrounds such as african amercican, ect.
Non Supremacist Whites- Focus on Personal attributes of themselves as individuals.

Definition

Race- refers to a groups genetics and physical characteristics to help separate you from other races.

Example: Black, White, caucasian, ect.

Ethnicity- Based on a group's race and cultural factors.

In my opinion race has a lot to do with nature and Ethnicity is more based on nurture.

  • Religion, Gender role and languages are factors of ethnicity
  •  how you were born and cultural nature you were brought up in. 

 

Term

Working class focuses on upper class, upper middle class, lower middle class, working class and lower class. 

Gender roles- Women are less likely to work in upper middle class.

  • This class persist of top executives. Less women carry such titles. This leads to social Inequality as well as gender roles
Definition
The lack of leadership roles women hold in these fields explains the topic of gender roles and how it changes based on what social class the person is in.

Upward Mobility

Definition

Level of education playing a role in moving up.

Businesses owned by lower working class and different races. 

How each working group manages their working/professional image

Example: Working class blacks, racially mixed class.

Immigrants working to move upward.
