Sherif was interested in how social norms form. He wondered if people influenced each other's interpretation of their environment. For example, nowadays I might run a study to see if people would come to have a different evaluation of a new tv show if they first viewed it with a group of people who liked it or if they first viewed it with a group of people who disliked it. The show would be the same, but, Sherif would expect that the social context would alter how we thought about the tv show then and perhaps forever. |
