• organisms have many and varied offspring
• offspring compete for survival in their environment
• certain traits increase chances of survival and reproduction
• surviving offspring more likely to perpetuate genes
• overtime, population characteristics change 

Norm 

Standards of behavior that are "socially prescribed" by one's environment

Behavior that describes what "normal" people do

Not Conformity or Obedience 

Conformity 

change in behavior or belief as the result of real or imagined group pressure

e.g. peer pressure

Obedience 

acting in accord with a direct order or command

if belief in action follows the behavior then it becomes acceptance 

e.g. Milgram studies 

Sleeper Effect 

a delayed impact of a message that occurs when an initially discounted message becomes effective as we remember the message but forget the reason for discounting it

e.g. Obama the Muslim 

Primacy vs. Recency Effects 

Primacy = tendency to remember info presented first or early to a receiver

Recency = tendency to remember info presented last or later to a receiver  (less common)
