WHAT IS THE CULTURAL PRODUCTION PERSPECTIVE WITH RESPECT TO FILM?

Definition

producers "encode" meaning in text (a series of "signs") with images, dialogue, and music.

the audience "decodes" meaning from the text and produces a "reading" of it.

audiences produce their own readings which can be categorized as:

preferred readings - that are consistent with dominant culture and reinforce cultural values. or

discrepant readings - which conflict with dominant culture and challenges cultural values.

polysemous texts - have ambiguous intrepretations

2. What is the cultural studies perspective with respect to film?

Definition
films are produced by corporations for profit.

success is dependent on unpredictable audience reception

most cultural products lose money. profits come from a few "hits"

producers take "bets" on proven "talent" (i.e. sucessful writers, directors & actors)

problem of talent:
talent cannot be controlled and there are very few successful artists.
artists seek creative autonomy (they're motivated by the pursuit of recognition from their peers in addition to money).
awards and other official recognition by peers & critics is important.
