Term
Ethmoid
Definition

Siding: Portions of the ethmoid usually found isolated are both midline structures- the crista galli and perpendicular plate.

Palatines
Definition

Siding: Superior surface is smooth, inferior (palatal) surface is rough, posterior edge is nonarticular, greater and lesser palatine foramina are posterolateral.

Term
Sphenoid (siding)
Definition
  • For pterygoid plates, the pterygoid fossa faces posteriorly, and the plates have non-articular, sharp posterior and inferior edges.
  • For the greater wing, the smooth, flat orbital surfaces face anteriorly, and the concave temporal surfaces face laterally.
  • The endocranial surface is posterosuperior, and its base is marked by the foramina rotunda, ovale, and spinosa. The latter foramen is at the spine of the greater wing, and the most posterolateral extent of the wing, often on the sphenosquamosal suture.
  • For a fragmentary lesser wing, the free, nonarticular end is superior, the wing tips face laterally, and parts of the frontal often adhere anteriorly. The anterior clinoid process points posteriorly.

Term
Ethmoid (articulations)
Definition

The ethmoid articulates with fifteen bones:

  • four of the neurocranium—the frontal, and the sphenoid (at the sphenoidal body and at the sphenoidal conchae).
  • eleven of the viscerocranium—, two Nasal bones, two maxillae, two lacrimals, two palatines, two inferior nasal conchae, and the vomer

[edit]

Term
Inferior nasal concha (articulations)
Definition
The inferior nasal concha articulates with four bones: the maxillary, ethmoid, palatine, and lacrimal.
Term
Palatine (articulations)
Definition

The Palatum is a facial bone and articulates with the following bones:

  • Sphenoid bone
  • Ethmoid bone
  • Maxilla
  • Inferior Nasal Concha
  • Vomer
  • Opposite palatine
Term
Sphenoid (articulations)
Definition
The sphenoid articulates with twelve bones: four single, the vomer, ethmoid, frontal, and occipital; and four paired, the parietal, temporal, zygomatic, and palatine.
Term
Vomer (articulations)
Definition

The vomer articulates with six bones:

  • two of the cranium, the sphenoid and ethmoid.
  • four of the face, the two maxillae; and the two palatine bones.

It also articulates with the septal cartilage of the nose.
