Term
mold
Definition
A hollow form created for casting materials that flow into the form when in a liquid state and then duplicate the form in reverse when hardened.
Term
cast
Definition
A form made by any of various techniques of creating a mold into which a material is poured in liquid form, allowed to harden, and removed from the mold.
Term
pattern
Definition
A full-size model of a desired form, to which casting materials are applied to create a mold.
Term
direct relief mold
Definition
A simple casting method by which material is poured into a mold and removed when hard, creating a relief that is flat on one side.
Term
negative mold
Definition
a receptacle for casting that is the reverse of the finished form.
Term
rigid plaster piece mold
Definition
A casting method by which the outside of a full-size positive pattern is divided into pieces; each piece is cast separately and then the pieces are reassembled as a hollow cast.
Term
shims
Definition
In casting, a thin piece of material ised to separate parts of a rigid plaster piece mold.
Term
slipcasting
Definition
Creating cast forms by pouring slip (slay in liquid suspension) into molds of plaster that pulls much of the water out of the slip, allowing it to dry and harden.
Term
flexible mold
Definition
A casting process by which a positive pattern is coated with liquid rubber or silicone to pick up the surface details and then plastered to make a mold that is cut in half; the two halves are cast and reassembled.
Term
lost-wax method
Definition
Any of several casting processes by which a layer of wax is melted away from surrounding positive and negative molds to create space into which the material for the cast can be poured.
Term
direct lost-wax method
Definition
Use of wax to create a cavity between a positive pattern and a negative mold; when the wax is heated, it melts and is drained off, and molten metal is poured into the cavity.
Term
indirect lost-wax method
Definition
A casting process similar to the direct lost-wax method, but instead of the positive form, the negative mold lined with wax is filled with a nonmelting core of crushed material.
Term
sand molds
Definition
a casting mold made of sand and a binder.
