Term
Specificity Theory
Definition
x amount of tissue damage = x amount of pain (x=x)/small amount of tissue damage = large amount of pain (x = X), large amount of tissue damage = small amount of pain (X=x)
Term
Gate Control Theory
Definition
in the spinal cord there is a gate that allows pain signals to go in and out. If the gate is open, pain signals will go through. If the gate is closed, pain signals can’t go through.
Term
Factors which open/close gate
Definition
1. Physical – counter stimulation (hurt and then rubbing)
2. Emotional – anxiety makes them nervous and it will increase the likelihood of the openness of the gate
3. Cognitive – as a person expects or anticipates pain, the gate will more likely be open
