Term
Life Science
Definition
Life Science is the science of observing and gaining knowledge about living things.
Term
Encyclopedia of Life (EOL)
Definition

Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) is a free online encyclopedia that one day will contain information on every known species on Earth.

www.eol.org

Term
Biology comes from a Greek word meaning?
Definition

It means knowledge of life

Term
What is taxonomy?
Definition
is a system of labeling things which groups of similar things with similar traits.
Term
What are three traits scientist consider important when they place living creature in kingdoms?
Definition

1.The structure of an organism’s cells.

2. How creatures get their food or energy.

3. How creature reproduce or have offspring.

Term
Cells with a well-defined nucleus surrounded by membrane & specialized parts (organelles) are called what?
Definition

Eukaryotes.

These are all eukaryotes:

animals, plants, fungi, chromista, and protozoa

Term
Cells with just a clump of genetic material that is not surrounded by a membrane are called what?
Definition

Prokaryotes.

Most prokaryotes have just one cell.

Bacteria and Archaea are prokaryotes.

Term
To be a member of the plant kingdom, an organism must do what?
Definition

Members of the plant kingdom must

make their own food with the help of

sunlight.

Term
Plants have complex cells with what kind of cell walls?
Definition
Plants have complex cells with rigid cell walls.
Term
There are two kinds of plants. What are they?
Definition

a. Vascular Plants: have tubes

b. Non-vascular Plants:

are plants that have no flowers and no tubes inside to move fluids around.

Moss is a non-vascular plant.

Term
What are vertebrates?
Definition

Animals with backbones.

Like lions, tigers and bears--Oh, my!

Term
What are invertebrates?
Definition

Animals without backbones.

Invertebrates outnumber vertebrates.

For every vertebrate there are 24 invertebrates.

Like worms, slugs, snails, nematodes, tapeworms--yuck!

Term
Fungi absorb nutrients from where?
Definition

The surface which they are attached-

- like the fungus that you see on a tree.

Term

Chromista are usually found in what habitat?

And name one chromista.

Definition

Watery habitatsKelp is a chromista.

          Diatoms are chromista as well.

Kelp grow in the clear water of shallow oceans. Kelp form forests of tall plants many feet in length anchored to the ocean floor by their roots. This is where seals and otters swim and hide from sharks.

Term
Name a type of fungi.
Definition

Mushrooms are fungi.   Some look like plants, but they do not make food with sunlight. Fungi do some great services. They help decompose dead organisms. On one episode of Dirty Jobs , Mike Rowe visited a mushroom farm where all the mushrooms were inside a dark building.

Term
Protozoa are they eukaryotes or prokaryotes
Definition

Protozoa are they eukaryotes.

They have a nucleus with a membrane around it.

Term
Are Protozoa multicellular or unicellular?
Definition
Protozoa are all unicellular.
Term
Two common members of Protozoa are?
Definition
Amoeba and Paramecium
Term
Are Protozoa 'water loving' or found in dry conditions?
Definition
They are 'water loving'.
Term
Bacteria are they eukaryotes or prokaryotes?
Definition
prokaryotes
Term
Are bacteria multicellular or unicellular?
Definition
unicellular
Term
Bacteria are helpful like the ones that make cheese out of what liquid?
Definition
milk
Term
Where do bacteria live?
Definition

Where do they live? EVERYWHERE...

–even in and on you…very creepy!

Term
Arhacea are they multi-cellular or unicellular?
Definition
unicellular
Term
Arhacea are they prokaryokes or eukaryotes?
Definition
Arhacea are prokaryotes
Term
How big are Arhacea?
Definition

They are less than micron in length… …That is 1/1,000,000th of meter.

That is much smaller than the period at the end of this sentence.

Term
Some arhacea live in what kind of extreme environments?
Definition
Some arhacea live in extreme environments like the hottest, coldest, saltiest and deepest places on Earth.
Term
Are viruses multicellular, unicellular or have no cell walls at all?
Definition
Viruses have no cell walls at all.
Term
What are viruses?
Definition
parasitic pieces of genetic material covered with protein.
Term
Viruses cause what kind of diseases?
Definition
Colds, flu, chickenpox, and rabies by infecting a host like a fifth grader. Ouch!
Term
Viruses need what to live and reproduce?
Definition
Viruses need a host to live and reproduce--Like yourself! Yuck!
Term
What is Symbiosis?
Definition
It is when living things help each other survive.
Term
How do hermit crabs and sea anemone have a symbiotic relationship?
Definition

The hermit crabs often carry sea anemones around (on top of their borrowed shells) to places where sea anemones can obtain food.

The sea anemones in turn sting anything that comes near the crab.

They both help each other!

Term
What tiny things inside your body help you?
Definition

Tiny creatures live in your intestinal tract and help you digest food.

In return, 5th graders give the microbes their breakfast, lunch and dinner (and dessert, too, if they are nice! lol)

Term
Who continued the work of Aristotle’s taxonomy and gave a lot of animals the names we use today?
Definition

Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) People from all over the world brought him living creatures for him to put into a group, or taxon.

As a child he liked to collect plants. He used microscopes and other tools to help him in the process of naming and classifying living things.
