Term
What is the R.A.C.E method?
Definition
restate th problem
analyze
Cite data
Expand/errors
Term
How do you calculate density
Definition
density = mass/volume
Term
How are acceleration and velocity related?
Definition
Velocity is the rate of change position. Both speed and direction are required.
Acceleration is the rate of change isnvelocity
Term
What are newtons three laws of motion? give examples
Definition
first- an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
soccer ball doesnt move unless its kicked
second-objects Acceleration depedes on the mass of the object. The greater the mass, the greater the amount of force needed.
throwing a baseball compared to a bowling ball
third- For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action
rocketship pushes on the ground and the ground pushes the rocket upward
Term
Explain terminal velocity
Definition
steady speed achieved by an object freely falling through a gas or liquid
Term
explain vector addition
Definition
vector additon is used when motion involves more than one velocity.
Term
How is work output of a machine related to work input of a machine?
Definition
The output work is less than the input work because of friction
Term
What two conditions need to be met in order for work to be done?
Definition
Work is done when a force acts on an objectt in the direction the object move. (force and distance)
Term
Explain the kinetic and potential energy of a car rolling down a hil.
Definition
The car has potential energy at the top of the hill. As the ball rolls down the hill, it gains kinetic energy and loses the potential energy
Term
What is the difference between a chemical and physical change?
Definition
A chemical can not be changed back and a physical can be.
Term
What are common indications of a chemical change?
Definition
change in color, the productuon of a gas and the formation of a precipitate
Term
Describe the structure of an atom.
Definition
three main particles, -electrons, nuetrons, protons
Term
How are atomic number and atomic mass related?
Definition
the atomic mass is the total mass of proton and nuetrons in a nucleus
the atomic number is the number of protons
Term
What characteristics do most metals have in common?
Definition
good conductors of electric current and heat, most are malleable, solid at room temperature and most are ductile (the can be drawn out into a wire)
Term
How are heterogeneous mixtures different from homogeneos mixtures?
Definition
heterogenous- the parts of the mixture are noticeably different from one another. (parts are different)
homogeneous- difficult to distinguish one substance in the mixture from another. (appears the same throughout)
Term
What are the common changes in phase of matter? Which of those changes is exothermic.
Definition
freezing, melting, sublimation, depositon, vaporization, condensation.

melting
Term
What particle of an atomic is involved in chemical reactions?
Definition
electrons
Term
What is the difference between ionic and convalent bonds?
Definition
A covalent bond is formed between two non-metals
An ionic bond is formed between a metal and a non-metal.
Term
How are earthquakes measured?
Definition
Richter scale
Term
What is erosion? What factors lead to it?
Definition
the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc.
Term
describe how the three types of rock form.
Definition
igenous rock- forms from magma
sedimentary rock- forms over time as sediment is squeezed and cemented together
metamorphic-forms from change in temperatur, pressure, or reactions wih hot water.
Term
describe the three type of plate boundaries
Definition
divergent- move away from each other
convergent-plates come together/collide
transform- slide past ech other, moving in opposite directions
Term
describe the layers of the earth
Definition
the crust, mantle, the core
Term
what are renewable and nonrenewable resources?
Definition
renewable-can be replaced
nonrenewable-not replaces once used. *will run out
Term
kinetic energy
Definition
the energy an object has when it is moving.
Term
potential energy
Definition
the energy an object has when it is stationary (not moving).
Term
mechanical energy
Definition
the energy of motion that does the work.
Term
thermal energy
Definition
the heat energy the object has (hot or cold at room temperature).
Term
what is work? work input? work output?
Definition
Work is done by transferring energy from one form to another.
input-the work done by the input force acting through the input distance
output- the output force multiplied by th output distance
Term
watershed
Definition
A ridge of high land dividing two areas that are drained by different
river systems.
Term
elements
Definition
are substances that cannot be broken down into simplier substances
Term
mixture
Definition
a substance made by combining two or more different materials in
such a way that no chemical reaction occurs
Term
chemical change
Definition
occurs when a substance reacts and forms one or more new substances
Term
physical change
Definition
occurs when some of the properties of a material change, but the substances in the material remain the same.
Term
exothermic change
Definition
releases energy to its surrounding
Term
endothermic
Definition
absorbs energ from its surroundings
Term
proton
Definition
positively charged particle
Term
electron
Definition
negatively charged particle
Term
nuetron
Definition
neutral particle
Term
atomic number
Definition
elements equal the number of protons
Term
mass number
Definition
sum of the protons and nuetrons
Term
periodic table
Definition
arrangement of elements in columns, based on a set of properties that repeat from row to row
Term
ions
Definition
atom that has a net positive or negative electric charge
Term
ionic bond
Definition
the force that holds cations and anions together
Term
convalent bond
Definition
a chemical bond in which two atoms share a pair of valence electrons.
