Term
"They have made worms' meat of me." - Mercutio
Definition
Most characters blame fate for the bad things that happen except Mercutio. As he dies he lets Romeo and Tybalt know that he blames them and their families.
Term
"hath made me effeminate" - Romeo
Definition
Between Mercutio's wounding and Benvolio's announcement of his death, Romeo questions the effect his love for Juliet has had on him - he thinks Juliet has made him "effeminate" whereas we know that is is love in general that changes him because of the way he acted with Rosaline.
Term
"O, I am fortune's fool." - Romeo
Definition
This exclamatory sentence links back to Mercutio's dying line as Romeo blames fate for what has happened whereas Mercutio curses the Montagues and capulets. Mercutio sees people as the cause of his death and gives no credit to any larger force.
Term
"And bring in cloudy night immediately." - Juliet
Definition
In Juliet's soliloquy, Juliet doesn't know the news of Tybalts death and longs for her night with Romeo. She values Romeo much more than her family. Later on in the scene, she forgives Romeo for killing Tybalt.
Term
"Tonight she's mew'd up to her heaviness." - Lady Capulet
Definition
Juliet's mother confuses her sadness for Romeo as grief for Tybalt's death showing how much she doesn't know her daughter.
Term
"He shall not make me there a joyful bride." - Juliet
Definition
The relationship between Juliet and her mother is a distant one shown by the way she calls her "Madam". Juliet echos her mothers words in a mocking defiant tone which is a big step for women of the time. In comparison to her traditional mother, she rebels against societys expectations for her future and therefore she represents womens rights to stand up for what they believe in.
Term
"Out you green-sickness carrion!" - Capulet
Definition
Capulet insults his daughter by referring to her as a anaemic lifeless corpse, the frequency of insults show how unforgivable he acts as a father.
Term
"Thou canst not speak of that thou dost not feel" - Romeo
Definition
Here Romeo is acting hateful towards the Friar compared to his pleading tone when persuading him to marry him and Juliet. This shows a change in Romeo's attitude as he is prepared to insult the Friar (his friend). This also shows how his love for Juliet is making him hurt the other people in his life as Juliet is now the only person on his mind. His narrow-mindness is what will inevitably lead to his fatal end.
Term
"Romeo's hand shed Tybalt's blood" - Juliet
Definition
Juliet is very emotional ehen she learns about Tybalt, at first she is suicidal, then confused and angry at Romeo before she forgives him.
Term
"beautiful tyrant" - Juliet
Definition
Shakespeare uses oxymorons such as "beautiful tyrant" and "fiend angelical" to show how her love for Romeo overpowers the evil he has done (killing Tybalt).
